Slider weights change the overall shift/acceleration characteristics. Lighter equals more low end and less top end. Heavier equals more top end and less low end.

Heavier slider weights provide more low end without losing as much top end vs roller weights.....So for instance a 12g slider provides roughly the same amount of low end as 10g rollers without the top end loss of the 10g rollers.

Sliders also last longer than rollers do. 12g are the most common weight of sliders used.
